Costa Serena was founded on the premise that cooperation is key to the success of any group of people. Though there are CC&Rs there is no HOA. It is rather an association of residents with a common goal of keeping a delightfully attractive community. With 696 homes this might have been quite a challenge, but the difference is in the people. You would be hard pressed to find a neighborhood where individuals are more genuinely interested in helping each other. Turnover is very low, and this gives an opportunity to learn more about each family.
You might find a homeowner’s association with dues in the $350 per month range that presented a lot of amenities. The question begs an answer – how often and how many of them will you use? Costa Serena has no monthly dues but operates solely with donations from its homeowners and residents for its operation. These donations are used to promote the interests of the community and maintain its senior status.
It is splendid when grandkids visit but the peace that settles over Costa Serena as the sun sinks in the west is a joy. Who doesn’t enjoy a good night’s quiet rest? You may think of a 55+ community as a place of inactive people. Not here. Many of the residents are still working and those who are retired often become busier than ever. We have surfers, artists, gardeners, students, chefs, and writers. Morning walks can be quite fascinating as we share stories, recipes, and observations.
There are three miles of walkable streets with sidewalks. Everything from flat straight-ahead, to low or steep hills. Some have views over the ocean. You can catch friends old and new out for a cardio workout or just strolling with their dog.
Mira Costa College is easily accessed on foot up Campus Street. There you will find a bookstore, an art gallery, a coffee shop, a library, and plenty of interesting courses to take ( or perhaps to teach!) The College has productions in three theatres, exhibitions, and musical performances open to the public. Want to learn Italian? How about 3D printing or the history of film making from 1880 to 1945? Just down the hill are several restaurants and convenient stores for groceries, crafts, auto parts (we have quite a collection of car buffs), donuts, coffee shops, and barbers.
The blue Pacific Ocean is a scant 3.5 miles away but the neat weather pattern usually leaves us out of the coastal grey zone except in May and June. More sunshine to enjoy and less fog than the high-rent district along the immediate coast.
